In recent months we have seen a marked increase in the number of large corporate organisations interested in finding new cost-saving initiatives to take to the boardroom table in 2014. One such initiative is to further drive efficiency and take the cost out of their existing absence management process. Absence Manager is a good fit for these organisations, as we work best with those who have a mature approach to absence policy, process and culture.

Employers need to keep a watchful eye on how the Health at Work Assessment and Advisory Service (HWAS) is developing as there are significant issues with the introduction of any major service such as this.

The latest CBI Absence and Workplace Health Survey published in July of this year stated that Absence is costing the UK £14 billion a year. With National Stress Awareness Day in November, it is also interesting to note that the report also states that; Mental health conditions are the single most widespread cause of long-term absence, with more than half (54%) of employers citing non-work related stress, anxiety and depression as a cause of long-term absence for non-manual workers, and slightly fewer (42%) for manual workers.

They attended to find out more about what is best practice and available to them to allow them to improve and optimise their absence management process within their organisations.

This month Big organisations such as Mars, Asda, Tesco and Nestle are supporting the IGD’s Feeding Britain’s Future campaign this month by offering 1500 free pre-employment workshops for young people out of work. This is very constructive, commendable and a great practical solution for which we applaud them. We wonder if IGD’s workshops will help these young people understand how good attendance can help them stand out as future employees.

Personnel Today reported last week that the number of sick days taken in the UK is falling, but the UK still takes most in the world. David Frost the Ex Director-General of the British Chambers of Commerce, commented on these findings. “These figures highlight the very real cost to business and the economy of a failure to properly manage absence. What the figures highlight is a lack of effective management”.
