A recent survey carried out by Barclays asked retail bosses what fears kept them awake in the run up to Christmas. The survey highlighted that the second biggest fear for retail bosses is one that has the potential to wreak just as much havoc over the festive period – staff sickness!

Last week the CIPD released the results of their annual survey into absence management in the UK with some interesting results. The headline figure is that the average number of days lost per employee has fallen from 7.6 days in last year’s survey to 6.6 days in this year’s – a significant reduction of 13% and as always a very welcome result but have they given us a true picture?

Absence management is so simple it often gets overlooked by the busy manager. Traditionally, all a manager had to do was take a call from their team member, ensure the data was recorded, stay in contact during the absence, and then conduct a 10 minute return to work interview.
Yet, so often these tasks ‘slip’ through the manager’s fingers, particularly when it is a short term absence of a trusted team member.

The Food and Drink Report (BDO, Feb 2014) highlighted that food manufacturers are seeing increasing price volatility of raw materials coupled with pricing pressure from customers. For many this is impacting upon operating margin and their ability to remain competitive. One area of inefficiency that can be fixed is the process of managing employee absence – an issue that can dramatically impact resourcing your production line.

However, it is not just the England scores and early exit that was interesting business leaders, they wondered if it would be UK Businesses 0 and Football 1? The EEF recent Absence Survey 2014¹ reported that the number of days taken off through sickness is at a record low, of 2.1% equal to 4.9 days per worker per year.
